September 11 Remembrance:  Today, September 11th, is the National Day of Remembrance and Service.  We remember this day because on September 11, 2001, our country suffered a devastating terrorist attack in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.  While the day is set aside to honor the sacrifices of victims, their families, and the service of the heroes who stood up during one of our country's darkest times; it is also an opportunity to remember similar recent examples. Over the course of the last few weeks, we saw acts of caring and respect, and citizens working to improve their community during Hurricane Harvey. Together we remember the service of first responders, military members, and individual heroes who displayed courage and sacrifice for others during challenging times. It is at this time that we will have a moment of silence in their memory.                                  

Classes Monday:  Today, Monday, September 11, will be our first “A” Day!!  Students must check their SJC SOS to find college room numbers.  College Room Numbers are not listed on your Horizons class schedule.  The timetable for A/B days follows:

Additional information

·       Due to the scale of textbook distributions, no book will be distributed the first weeks of school outside the above times.

·       All college books will be distributed on the above schedule.  There may be departments/courses who have nor notified Dual Credit/Clear Horizons of the needed materials by this first week of classes.  In these cases, Clear Horizons will send notification to students enrolled in courses via Naviance as materials become available.

·       To ensure notification emails are received, students should have a current email address in Naviance.

·       Book exchanges due to schedule changes will not be addressed until after the above distributions are completed.  Tuesday, September 19, students may submit a Textbook Request form to the bookroom for materials needed/not needed due to a schedule change.



Science Fair Club:  Do you love science?? Would you like the opportunity to replace up to two MAJOR science grades this semester with 100s?? Would you like to meet like-minded people who share your passion for science and discovery?? Mrs. Bufford is looking for students like YOU to come join the science fair club!! Look for her way-too-cool Science Fair Club table on Friday at this year’s Fall social to talk to her and sign up. We will have our first meeting Tuesday, September 12, at 3:30pm to go over the details and initial deadlines for this year’s science fair.


Fall Social!  What is the fall social? The fall social is an opportunity for students to get involved in school clubs and activities. Students are given time to walk around and interact with other students and sign up for clubs. Students can also play games and make new friends. It is happening this September 15, from 12:10 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. See you all there!

Service Learning Recognition:  Attention all Coyotes:  If you have participated in service learning or community service in the past year, you are eligible to apply for the 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.  Students interested in applying for this prestigious award can pick up a flyer from Ms. Kahlich in 9.107. Deadline for the online application is November 7, 2017.  An honoree and two runners-up will be chosen based on initiative, effort, impact, and personal growth. The honoree becomes eligible for a $1,000 state award, $5,000 national award and free trip to Washington D. C.   Please consider applying!!!!!  


Late Arrival Day: Wednesday, September 20, is a CCISD High School Late Arrival Day.  There will be no morning neighborhood buses available due to CCISD High School Late Arrival. Clear Horizons buses will still run from the 5 zoned high schools (a shuttle does not run from Clear View High School on Late Arrival Days).  Clear Horizons does not participate in Late Arrival Days, therefore all Clear Horizons students are required to attend all classes on that day.


Open House:  The Clear Horizons Open House has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 28 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. in our building, building 9.  The format will be different than in years past in hopes of making the night more informative.  Please be advised, some classrooms are upstairs.  There is an elevator, but it is in building 8.  We will have student helpers there to assist parents and families throughout the evening. We hope to see you all there!


School Pictures:  Our school photographer will be on campus for school photos Friday, September 29.  School picture makeup day will be Wednesday, October 18.


Progress Reports:  There will not be a progress report distributed this week due to the school outage caused by Hurricane Harvey.  All grade reports will be electronically distributed this year, unless parents utilize the online option to opt in to the paper report.  We will include this information in the weekly callouts leading up to the distribution and posting of each three week progress report.  The first progress report of the year will be posted on Thursday, October 5.


Parent Information Night:  Clear Horizons will conduct our first Parent Information Night of the year Tuesday, September 26, beginning at 7:00 PM.  Our amazing counselors will discuss all you ever wanted or needed to know about Naviance.  You don’t want to miss this session! 


CCISD Student Holiday:  CCISD students will have a school holiday Friday, October 6.  As there are no college classes on Fridays, Clear Horizons students will be able to enjoy a three day weekend!


Clear Horizons School Shirts!  It’s not too late to purchase a Clear Horizons School Shirt!!  Just stop by the office with $15 and you can have one of these great shirts to wear on your service learning trip!  Remember, all Clear Horizons students must wear a school shirt while on the Service Learning Trips.  Get yours today!



Service Learning:  With the recent devastation from Hurricane Harvey, many CHECHS students volunteered their services at shelters, in neighborhoods cleaning out homes, at animal shelters, and with the CCISD Cares campaign.  If you did volunteer your time to help others in need, please stop by Ms. Kahlich's office 9.107 to pick up a service learning form to document your service.  

The absolute final due date for all Service Learning hours to be submitted is:

March 29 – All Service Learning Hours (at least 20 hours) must be turned in by this date.


As service learning is a key aspect of our mission at Clear Horizons, students who do not meet the 20 hour requirement will meet with Clear Horizons administration to explain the deficit.  Students who refuse to meet the requirement will be returned to their zoned campus.


Online Registration:  Parents, if you have not verified your student’s information online please do so by going to click the “@Home” button and signing in with your Skyward user name and password.  If you are having trouble or you did not have a Skyward account last year please contact Mrs. Thomas by email at jothomas@ccisd.net  with your Student’s Name and the parent’s email address or the email you registered with last year.


Proof of Residence:  Every family each year must provide a proof of residence to the school each of their students attend.  If you did not participate in early registration this summer you must provide a proof of residence for the 2017-2018 school year.  Acceptable forms of a proof of residence are the following:


Utility Bill (gas, water or electricity only)

Lease agreement

Mortgage statement


Please include your student’s name and grade level on the copy of your proof of residence.  Parents are welcome to send the proof of residence to the Clear Horizons front office with their student or you can drop it off in person.



Late Bus:  The late bus will begin Tuesday, September 12Clear Horizons provides a late bus that runs every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:45 PM.  The late bus will be in front of our school by 4:45 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday and typically departs within 10 minutes. The late bus will drop off in two locations: The East side of 45 at Clear Creek High School and on the West side of 45 at Brookside Intermediate. Students who are planning on riding the late bus must request a pass from the office. The request must be made for official business only (ie tutorials, a rehearsal, detention, etc.). A bus pass must be picked up before 1:00 p.m. on the day you want to ride (Tuesday or Thursday). No bus passes will be issued after lunch.  If you do not have a pass you will not be allowed to ride the bus.  If no one has picked up a late bus pass, the bus will be cancelled. Students, make sure that your parent/guardian knows that you are staying late and catching the late bus. The front office closes at 3:30p.m.  When signing up for pass students must include the following:

1) Purpose – Why are you staying late?

2) Location from 3:30 – 5:00 – Where will you be?

3) Parent Permission – Did you let your parent know you were staying late?

The reason we must have this information is so that we can find you in case of an emergency.



Dress Code:  Clear Horizons follows the CCISD dress code.  The student dress code can be found on our website under the “For Parents” tab or the “For Students” tab. 



Driving your own vehicle to school?  All students who drive and park on campus must register with SJC for a parking permit.  Beginning this school year, all students who drive to school must also register their vehicles with the Clear Horizons office.  Please stop by the office to get a copy of the Clear Horizons Parking Regulations and a Clear Horizons Vehicle Registration Form.



Service Learning Opportunities:


Book Buddies Reading Program: September 5th through November 14th - Book Buddies is an early literacy program where a little buddy (child in 1st-3rd grade) is paired with a big buddy (high school aged). The big buddy helps the little buddy pick out books and listens to them as they read out load. As the little buddy reads, the big buddy helps with sounding out words, pronunciation, grammar, and reading dynamics. The new date for the Parker Williams Book Buddies Orientation is Tuesday, September 19, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.  The program is every Tuesday through November 14th from 5-5:45 p.m., (Sept. 19-Training, 26; Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; Nov. 7, 14) and is held at the Parker Williams Library at 10851 Scarsdale Blvd (Scarsdale and Beamer).


Gilmore Gator Bash:  Gilmore Elementary will be holding their Gator Bash and is need of volunteers.  They need volunteers for set up on Friday, November 3 from 4-8pm and Saturday, November 4 from 8-4pm for set up, working booths and take down. If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up with Ms. Kahlich in 9.107. Deadline for sign up is October 13.
